MI6’s core function is to work safely and securely with brave and unique individuals who have sensitive information on the activities of governments, terrorists or criminals that threaten the UK and its interests overseas. Protecting these people is our top priority and has been for over 100 years. Our entire organisation exists to serve this purpose.

Threats to the United Kingdom

If you have information relating to an urgent or immediate threat to life in the UK, such as a planned terrorist attack, please immediately contact the Police by calling 999 (if you are in the UK) or contacting the Anti-Terrorism Hotline on 0800 789 321.

How to contact us

Online via this website

Please navigate to the link at the bottom of this page.

In person

Please do not visit a British Embassy if you believe that you may be being monitored. If you do not believe that you are being monitored or are able to travel to a different country, you can physically visit the British Embassy or British High Commission there and tell a British official that you have information for MI6.

  • Do think of a reason you can give to others if you are seen going into or out of the embassy (for example; to make a visa enquiry or raise a query about doing business in UK).
  • Do not give your information to anyone who is not a British Embassy official.
  • Do not attempt to pass information to a British Embassy over the telephone.
  • If you are uncomfortable entering the embassy, consider delivering a sealed letter or note.
  • Do expect it to take us some time to process and verify your information.

Via a third party

If you are physically unable to contact us, you could consider having someone else who you trust deliver your information for you.

  • This person can contact us for you using any of the methods on this page.
  • Please think through carefully exactly what it is that you are asking this person to do.

By post

In some circumstances, you may want to post a sealed letter to a British Embassy, marked on the inside for the attention of SIS or MI6. Do not write or reference SIS or MI6 on the envelope or where it is externally visible. We do not recommend this in general as we have no control over the security or reliability of postal services.

  • Do not include your name or any identifying information that might put you at risk.
  • Do include details on how we can securely make contact with you.
  • Do check carefully for security cameras or other tools which might record you posting the letter.
  • Do take simple measures to reduce the risk from fingerprints and/or DNA on the letter.
